Ranks and ELO
The wins-based rank ladder, the tool each rank gives, and how ELO matchmaking works.
HoeWars rewards regular play two ways: a visible rank tier that climbs as you win, and a hidden ELO rating that keeps Ranked matches balanced.
Rank tiers
Your rank is based on total wins. Pass a tier's win requirement and you move up. A rank-up message shows in chat when you cross a threshold.
| Rank | Wins required | Tool tier |
|---|---|---|
| Coal | 0 | Wooden |
| Copper | 10 | Wooden |
| Iron | 25 | Iron |
| Gold | 50 | Golden |
| Diamond | 100 | Diamond |
| Netherite | 200 | Netherite |
These thresholds, display names, and tool tiers are all set in config.yml under the ranks section. You can rename tiers, change win requirements, or adjust tools. See Configuration.
What the tool tier does
The tool tier sets which hoe you carry into a match. It is cosmetic progression: a higher rank carries a fancier tool. The claim radius per rank is configurable if you want higher ranks to paint a wider area, though it is set to a single block for every rank by default.
ELO matchmaking
ELO is a hidden rating that measures skill. Only Ranked matches change it. Unranked and Deathmatch leave it alone.
- Everyone starts at a base rating of 1000.
- After a Ranked match, your rating moves based on how you placed against the rest of the field.
- Beating stronger opponents gains more than beating weaker ones. Losing to weaker opponents costs more.
The math uses the standard ELO formula with a K-factor of 32. Your expected result is compared against your actual placement, and your rating shifts toward the difference.
ELO can be turned off, and the base rating and K-factor changed, in the elo section of config.yml. See Configuration.
